What is a Doula?

A doula is one of the most powerful forms of support you can have during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period, and often one of the most misunderstood.
Research consistently shows that having a doula leads to better birth outcomes, lower rates of intervention, shorter labors, and more positive postpartum experiences. But beyond the data, what families tell us again and again is simpler than that: having a doula made me feel less alone.

What families are saying

Christine was a calming voice in the birthing room, and an advocate for me when things got hard. Postpartum she has continued to be a support person as questions have arisen.

When Sarah-Grace left the hospital, I turned to my husband and said, “I don’t think I could have done that without her... Actually, I could have, but I’m really, really glad that I didn’t.”

What is a Doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides non-medical physical, emotional, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

What’s the difference between a birth doula and a postpartum doula?

A birth doula supports you first during pregnancy to get to know you, build rapport and learn what’s important to you going into labor. During labor and delivery your doula supports you from early contractions via the phone, to meeting you in person at your home or hospital and through the first hours after birth.

A postpartum doula supports you after your baby arrives, helping with newborn care, infant feeding, birth recovery, and adjusting to life as a new family. Postpartum doulas are primary educators helping you learn the many “firsts” of new parenthood. Many families choose to work with both.

How does Baby Caravan find my doula match?

After you complete our inquiry form, our team reviews your needs, preferences, due date, and location. We hand-select two to three doulas from our collective who we believe are the right fit. We introduce you, you interview them, and then you choose who to work with. We're here throughout the process for any questions or additional support.

What doula qualifications do Baby Caravan doulas have?

Every doula in the Baby Caravan collective has completed certified doula training, has documented birth and postpartum experience, and has been personally vetted by our team. Additionally, all our doulas are CPR certified and have professional liability insurance. We only work with doulas we trust with our own families.

How much does a doula cost?

Birth doula packages in NYC typically range from $1,500 to $6,000+ depending on the doula’s experience and what is included in their services package. Postpartum doula support is typically billed hourly, ranging from $45 to $85+ per hour depending on experience. Many families use employee benefits like Carrot, Progyny, or Maven to offset the cost. Additionally some families use tax-advantaged accounts such as an HSA or FSA to pay for doula services. Over two-thirds of our doulas are eligible to work with these providers. If cost is a barrier, we can also connect you with sliding scale options.

Do I need a doula if I already have a supportive partner?

Absolutely yes. A doula and a partner play completely different roles. A doula brings professional training, calm experience, and a knowledge base your partner simply can't have — and frees your partner to be fully emotionally present rather than trying to remember what they read in a birth class. Many of our families say their doula was as valuable for their partner as for them.
