Dedicated on-call sibling support for when you head to the hospital in labor.

While you are in labor, a sibling doula is with your older child keeping them comfortable, engaged, and emotionally supported or being present at the birth if that's part of your plan.

What is a Sibling Support Doula?

Sibling doula support is dedicated care for your older child or children during the birth of a new sibling. While you are in labor, a sibling doula is with your older child keeping them comfortable, engaged, and emotionally supported or being present at the birth if that's part of your plan. For families with older children, it can make an enormous difference.

What’s included

What your sibling doula handles:

Prenatal visit

This is an opportunity for your older child or children to meet their sibling doula and get to know each other before the big day.

24/7 on-call support

The biggest part of being a sibling doula is being on-call 24/7 for whenever labor begins. Your doula is available by phone or text starting around week 38.

Labor day care for older children

Dedicated, loving care for your child or children while you labor, either at home or at the hospital, so your birth support team can focus entirely on you.

Birth witnessing support

If your family has chosen to have older children present at the birth, your sibling doula prepares them in advance and supports them throughout.

We introduce you to your doula matches and you schedule interviews with them. When you find the right fit, you hire your doula directly. Your doula will get you set up with your contract and invoice for services.

The Baby Caravan difference

What Baby Caravan offers is something different: a matching process built on 13 years of real relationships, intentional vetting, and a collective of doulas we know personally.
Every sibling doula in our collective has completed a certified doula training, holds professional liability insurance, and is CPR certified. At Baby Caravan you tell us what matters to you and we hand pick our top recommendations for you.
Sibling doula support is a specialty within our collective that we match carefully. A great sibling doula is someone who is genuinely wonderful with children at a range of developmental stages, and understands the emotional complexity of this transition.
Find my sibling doula
Our three-year-old was so scared about the baby coming. Having a sibling doula meant that on the day I went into labor, he had his own person — someone who had already spent time with him and who he trusted. He got to come meet his sister in a way that felt safe and special. It's one of my favorite memories of that whole experience.

What if I want my older child at the birth? Is that something a sibling doula can support?

Yes, having a dedicated sibling doula present is actually one of the best ways to make a child-inclusive birth work well. Your sibling doula prepares your child in advance, stays attuned to how they're doing throughout, and helps them process what they're experiencing in real time. It lets you focus on your birth while they focus on your child.

What happens if labor starts in the middle of the night?

Your sibling doula is on call in the same way your birth doula is. They are available when labor begins, day or night. This is something to discuss and confirm when you hire, so expectations are clear on both sides before your due date.

Does my child get to meet their sibling doula before the birthing day?

Yes, absolutely. Your sibling doula will work with you to set up a prenatal visit together so that your child and the doula are able to build a rapport and get to know each other.
