What is a Doula Collective?

Referral-based

At Baby Caravan, we do things differently. We’re a referral-based doula collective, rather than a doula agency, serving families across the New York City metro area. That means our role is to introduce you to independent birth and postpartum doulas who align with your needs, values, and preferences.

Independent

Every doula in our collective has their own business and independent practice. They set their own rates, define their services, and bring a personalized approach to their work. Whether you're seeking birth, daytime postpartum, or overnight postpartum support, you’ll be able to choose a doula whose practice feels right for you.

Free Matching

Our matching service is completely free for families. You’re never charged to explore your options. Once you’ve connected with your doula, you’ll work with them directly, signing contracts, discussing rates, and building your relationship with no middleman involved.

Flexibility

By supporting a collective model, Baby Caravan ensures that both families and doulas thrive while prioritizing flexibility, transparency, and trust at the core of every connection.

About Baby Caravan

Baby Caravan was founded in 2013 by Jen Mayer, a New York City doula with a belief that every family deserves to feel supported during one of the most transformative experiences of their lives and that finding the right doula shouldn't be hard. Jen sought out a way to save expectant parents time in their doula search process by creating a personalized, yet streamlined approach to doula and client matching.
What began as a small collective of trusted colleagues has grown into one of NYC's most established doula matching services, with 90+ vetted birth and postpartum doulas serving families across the five boroughs and surrounding metro area.
Jen has been featured in New York Magazine, Vogue, The Atlantic, and The New York Post.

About Jen Mayer

Former massage therapist and doula of 16 years, Jen Mayer founded Baby Caravan in 2013 to help parents navigate the many decisions they face throughout pregnancy and new parenthood.
A parent of two herself, Jen recognizes that our country is not set up to support families, so through her doula matching and coaching services she aims to provide families with holistic guidance and support. In addition to running Baby Caravan, she is an AFC® Accredited Financial Counselor and founder of Fully Funded, where she helps individuals and couples with a variety of financial projects. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, two children, and two cats.

Birth Justice

In the United States, systemic inequities demand a response and reproductive justice is foundational to everything we do.
Doulas are one of the most powerful tools we have for more equitable maternity care. Research shows that continuous doula support reduces unnecessary medical interventions, improves communication between patients and providers, and leads to more empowering birth experiences, particularly for families who have historically been underserved or dismissed by the medical system.
Our collective reflects New York City in all its diversity. Our doulas represent a wide range of backgrounds, identities, languages, and lived experiences because we believe that shared identity and cultural understanding can be profoundly meaningful in the birth space.

What we’re committed to

If you're a family who has felt unseen in medical spaces or a doula who is doing this work because you believe birth care should be different: this space is for you.
