Lactation Consultant Services

It’s never too early to hire a lactation/infant feeding professional. An IBCLC (Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is clinical-level lactation support that is an integral part of your team of care providers.

Prenatally, lactation consultants can educate you on feeding options and help you flesh out your goals. Postpartum, they can provide latch assessments, do weighted feeds, help with establishing milk supply, tackle supplementation concerns, and support you in meeting your unique feeding goals. Down the line, they will help you formulate a back-to-work feeding plan, navigate pumping logistics, and organize all necessary support. Your IBCLC will fill out a superbill to be reimbursed by your insurance provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You can hire an LC at any time, but we highly recommend finding one before your baby is born so you have someone waiting in the wings if and when issues arise. A lactation consultant can see you even before you’re discharged from the hospital (although most hospitals do have lactation consultants that make rounds on the postpartum floors) or see you once you’re home.

  • Your lactation consultant will likely want to know about how the last 24-48 hours have been and any issues that have occurred. They can help you establish a strong latch and also help you determine whether your baby is getting enough milk. They can help you navigate your pump and make sure it is properly fitted and also teach you supplemental ways of feeding your baby if there are latch issues. These are just some examples and every lactation consultant conducts their visits differently.

  • The following insurances may be accepted by some of the IBCLCs that work with us: BCBS, Cigna PPO, Aetna and UHC. Both FSA and HSA can be accepted.

If your IBCLC is out-of-network with you insurance, they will fill out a superbill to be reimbursed by your insurance provider. A superbill is a receipt for lactation services, products, and rentals provided to the nursing parent. It includes areas for listing pump and scale rentals with CPT codes, ICD-10 diagnosis codes required by insurance companies, and CPT codes for lactation services and counseling.
